Go Forward By His Spirit

Many time a casual reading of scripture will not yield the depth nor the whole meaning of a passage. Today I discovered one of these moments as Rev. Bob Perry was preaching. (See it is not only when I am speaking that I can chase rabbits) The sermon was about the power of Holy Spirit in our lives and our great need to be continuously filled with His Spirit. The specific text he was referencing was Zechariah 4:6, a very well known verse. As I often do I read the surrounding verses as I listen to get a better context for my understanding. So I started reading back in verse one. I did not really remember the portion about the two trees which inspired my curiosity. The passage I read is as follows:

Zechariah 4:1-7 (ESV)

1 And the angel who talked with me came again and woke me, like a man who is awakened out of his sleep. 2 And he said to me, “What do you see?” I said, “I see, and behold, a lampstand all of gold, with a bowl on the top of it, and seven lamps on it, with seven lips on each of the lamps that are on the top of it. 3 And there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.” 4 And I said to the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?” 5 Then the angel who talked with me answered and said to me, “Do you not know what these are?” I said, “No, my lord.” 6 Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.

As we might say down here in the South, “Well that dog will hunt!” Simply meaning just like that this passage will preach well and effectively, but wait there is more! As I was following along on my Bible app on my iPad I decided to jet over to the Amplified Bible to see if there was more understanding for me there. Well, it turns out that the two trees bear much significance later in prophecy (this whole passage is from a prophetic vision given to Zechariah). You can also find these two trees in Revelation chapter 11 – also a prophecy (God’s Word is really cool). Anyway, the verse I found most inspiring from the Amplified Bible was verse 6. Here is how it reads:

Zechariah 4:6

“Then He said to me, This [addition of the bowl to the candlestick, causing it to yield a ceaseless supply of oil from the olive trees] is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit [of Whom the oil is a symbol], says the Lord of Hosts.”

(bold & underline added)

Did you catch that? The oil from the two olive trees represents a continuous supply of the Spirit to enable, in this case, the believer to accomplish God’s mission. This is a picture for your brain of how God intends for Holy Spirit to work in your life.

Fast forward to Paul’s instruction:

Ephesians 5:1, 15-19 (ESV)

1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.

15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,

(bold & underline added)

How are you going to have the ability to walk wisely and be an imitator of God? Simple – stay in connection to the continuous flow of Holy Spirit so that He might enable you to accomplish His work in you!

There is much more which could be said here but let me save some for another post.

Here are the two applications I would like for you to take away from this writing:

(1) Do not settle for a simple or casual reading of the Word – take time to study so you can get a more full meaning of what the Word is saying.

(2) Stay connected to the continuous flow of Holy Spirit so you can be the Christian God has designed you to be and you want to be.

Bonus Application:

(3) It is alright to chase rabbits!

Go Forward – Fast 2016 – Day 21

Day 21 – Shock and Awe – Exodus 14:30-31

30 So the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.

31 Thus Israel saw the great work which the Lord had done in Egypt; so the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord and His servant Moses.

Well, congratulations, you made it to day 21. No doubt there are some of you reading this that never thought you could make it to this point. Some have said that by this time the cravings for whatever you are fasting will have subsided by now. Others have said that it has just gotten steadily worse over the last three weeks. Whatever your experience has been you have permission to be proud of your accomplishment. We all know that it has been achieved by self-control, determination and mostly by the empowerment of His Holy Spirit.

In the last two verses of the passage we see that Israel looks behind them to see the carnage of what is left of a once fearsome foe floating in the Red Sea. Their dead bodies were washing up onto the shore. The closing remarks Moses records here can be divided into three thoughts:

1) They saw the great work God had done. As we finish this time of prayer and fasting it would be good for you to take a few moments to look back and see the great things which God has done in and for you. Take time to see His hand in each day of the last weeks and recognize His mighty works.

2) They feared the Lord. If you will rightly observe the greatness of God you cannot help but be in awe of Him. Like the song says, “Our God is an Awesome God…” He really is. His works are mighty, none of them are weak and anemic. He had done great things because He is a great God. Have an awesome respect for who He is not just for the things He can do.

And finally,

3) They believed. Hopefully over the course of this year’s fast you have grown closer to God and so your belief in Him has also grown. There is no God like Jehovah. There is none that can hold a hope against Him. There is nothing remotely similar to Him in the entire universe. All who oppose Him will be blown away, all who trust in Him will be saved. It is a simple lesson which has such a great impact in your life. Believe in Him and Go Forward with Him!

Now Go Forward and be Godly!
