Go Forward – Fast 2016 – Day 1
Category : Go Forward
Greetings fellow traveler. Our church (The Church at Wellington – Little Rock, AR) participates in a 21-day corporate time of prayer and fasting each year. I write a short devotional guide for each day of the fast which is centered around our annual theme. I invite you to participate with us in whatever manner the Lord would lead you to. The Dinosaur Nation Blogs which follow the next 21 days are provided for you as a guide for this specific period of fasting and prayer. Each day has a special focus which has been gleaned from the Biblical account of the children of Israel leaving their bondage in Egypt just until they cross the Red Sea. In a big way God delivers His people from slavery but now must lead them through the wilderness to form them into a nation. That nation will serve to display God to the entire world and eventually God will through them provide the Messiah, Jesus, who will come to save us all.
This guide should serve you as a starting point for each day for you to concentrate on one aspect of their journey and should also serve for a focal point for your journey throughout the next 21 days.
Understand that this guide is not sufficient in itself for your complete prayer and fasting experience. You must spend time with God in prayer and allow His Holy Spirit to lead you into deeper truth specifically for your life. This is just meant to get you focused in on some of the great things He has done.
Enjoy the writings and stories and my God bless you incredibly for taking on this adventure. May He release a spirit of fasting upon you as you experience a true life change over the course of the next three weeks.
Day 1 – The Fear of War – 13:17
17 Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.”
As you probably know from the Old Testament stories the Philistines were a fierce fighting people. The main trade route from Egypt to the Promised Land would take the Nation of Israel directly through the borders of Philistia. God knew that His people had been taking orders from others for many generations as the served as slaved in the land of Egypt. He also knew that they were likely to cower in fear as they faced vicious battles to gain passage through this hostile land. There is another reason He led them to turn from this route but you will have to wait until Day 6 to hear that story. God’s plan does not include His people returning to a life of slavery so He turns them around and sends them another way.
On this journey of prayer and fasting you will find that the short way is not the best way. The next 21 days will require of you a great deal of discipline and personal controls. There will be days which will be harder for than others but the entire pathway will not be an easy one. That said, the pathway God has chosen for you will most certainly be the best one. Some of the things you will encounter and many of the things you will learn simply cannot be learned any other way. The goal of the Lord for you is for you to come out on the other side stronger than you have ever been, wiser in His ways and more obedient to His voice that ever before in your spiritual walk with Him. Do not fear what may lie ahead for you on this journey. Rest in the calm assurance that He will safely guide you through to a great change for your life.
The Theme for this season of prayer and fasting is “Go Forward!” this is taken directly from the passage we will be studying however we will not arrive at that portion of scripture until Day 16. For now let it suffice to say that God wants you to be moving forward into a greater and deeper relationship with Him over the course of the next few days. This would be a good time for you to take a few minutes and clear the slate, so to speak, with God by spending some time in searching your soul for those things which have drifted into your heart, soul and mind which are not pleasing to Him. Ask your gracious Heavenly Father to forgive you and allow Him to cleanse you for your journey.
