Go Forward – Fast 2016 – Day 12

Day 12 – Irrational Fear – Exodus 14:11

11 Then they said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt?

Fear can be very debilitating. Some fears are understandable:

Achluophobia- Fear of darkness.

Agliophobia- Fear of pain.

Acousticophobia- Fear of noise.

Or maybe even – Ecclesiophobia- Fear of church.

Others are a little harder to understand:

Consecotaleophobia- Fear of chopsticks.

Ephebiphobia- Fear of teenagers.

Geniophobia- Fear of chins. Genuphobia- Fear of knees.

The Israelite army has now been reduced to crying and accusations. Fear has gripped their hearts. They have quickly changed from a courageous army to a fear-filled bunch of slaves. Their response was not only to cry, but also to start blaming Moses. They start by accusing him of leading them (they seem to have already forgotten the fire/cloud leading them) into the desert to die with no proper place to be laid to rest. Then they accuse him of doing all of this on purpose just because he is so mean!

Of course all of this is totally unfounded and irrational. But that is how the enemy works against us.

When I was a young boy I awoke in the night to the sound of rain and a snapping sound coming from the end of my bed. I was absolutely convinced that there was an alligator under the end of my bed smacking his lips just waiting for me to step off the bed so he could nibble away at my legs. Only after screaming for my dad to come and rescue me did I find out that the light revealed that it was only a leaky room and rain water pooling at the foot of my bed. Silly me. Many years later I still am a bit embarrassed that my imagine could get so far away from me. Perhaps you have a similar story about yourself?

On a more spiritual note – quite often our imaginations get away from us and it turns us into a cowering ball of terror. But – are you ready for this – when the “Light” (think fire/cloud and Jesus as the Light of the world) is brought into the situation the reality is exposed, satan is shown to be a liar and the glory of God is displayed for all to see.
