Go Forward – Fast 2016 – Day 13

Day 13 – Tempted to Turn – Exodus 14:12

12 Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.”

Oh great, here it comes, written down right here in the scriptures for us all to see. After fear has lied to them, overwhelmed their hearts and caused them to start pointing fingers and making accusations then temptation comes into the picture. The next step in the progression has arrived – that is the temptation to turn and run. That is exactly where God’s chosen people are finding themselves.

How many times have you made this statement, “If only I had…”? They quickly have been reduced into second guessing their decision of leaving their slavery and heading out to their homeland. The problem of all of this is that they are stuck between two mountains on either side, the Red Sea in front of them and the Egyptian army closing in on them quickly. Of course they were tempted to turn around – they just had nowhere to run. Wait a minute! I thought God had led them here with His fire/cloud? This cannot possibly be part of His plan. God has led them out into the wilderness just to see them be cornered and destroyed.

Maybe you have been in a corner like this before or at least you have felt like it? Think for a moment how it made you feel. What were you tempted to do? Run? Cry? Blame others?

Today our focus is on a big dose reality. Before you were saved, what was life really like for you? If you are honest with yourself you were really a lot worse off than you have been since you have received Christ’s invitation to believe. There is really no comparison. Where there was chaos there is now peace. Where there was darkness, now you walk in light.

When you are tempted to turn and run please stop for a moment and really consider what you have right now. I have witnessed several who have turned away from the faith – it has never ended well. I really do not expect that, after making it over halfway through this fast that you are now going to cut and run, but I also know that at this time in your pursuit of God there are many temptations to turn away from the pathway where He is leading you. If you are fasting food it may be a chip that is calling your name. If you are fasting meat the sight of the Chick-Fil-A cow commercial causes you to breakout in cold sweats. The pain of affliction in fasting can become almost unbearable and seem impossible to overcome, but the reality is that you can stay the course and fight what seems to be impossible odds. Hold steady and wait on God to show up on your behalf!
