Go Forward – Change My Heart 5-2-2016
Go Forward: Change My Heart
This month, at The Church at Wellington, is focused on “Go Forward: And Change Me.” Following is a short recap of my sermon from May 1, 2016.
The reality within the church is that there needs to be massive changes. There is a world around us which has lost all sense of moral direction. Just today I spoke to one of my family members who told me of a friend whose church (thankfully non-Assembly of God) which is involved in a debate whether or not Jesus is really the only way to eternal life. Further, this last week in a television special a major political figure made a statement that said (I paraphrase) that we all serve the same god (referring to a major eastern religion who has a god other than Jehovah). The prevailing godless mindset of non-believers is not really what troubles me. It is when the believers within the confines of the church are not significantly different in appearance, attitudes, nor actions from the non-believing world.
The remedy is very simple – we need to change! But, how do we affect such change?
(1) God’s Part
19 And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,
The first step is God’s. He calls us unto Himself and desires to do some radical surgery on us. He must initially take out the cold heart which comes as a result of our sins and replace it with a warm caring heart which is tender towards Him.
That’s God’s part!
(2) Our Part
20 that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.
Our portion of this change is to walk right, and obey. Easier said than done most of the time. We, as humans, tend to be distracted by the shiny and glittery things the world has to offer us. We have great intentions when we leave the altar only to walk astray of the path that leads directly in the pathway which will affect the greatest change in us towards God.
The key to us being able to do our part is to first allow God to do His part with us. When He changes our heart our whole priority system gets a makeover. Now we will actually want to do the things which are right. But what is going to help keep u on the right track?
The “why” is the key for us. What is to be our chief motivation? Later on in chapter 36 of Ezekiel the “why” is explained. WARNING – what you are about to hear may mess up your personal priority system!
Read the passage below carefully.
21 But I had concern for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came.
22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came.
26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
36 Then the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the Lord; I have rebuilt the ruined places and replanted that which was desolate. I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.
The reason God tells the Israelites for this spiritual surgery and for His commands to obey is not for our sake but for His. Please understand the God loves you so much that He sent His only Son to die for you! But He is interested in more than just you. His desire is that the entire population come to Him. The only way that will happen is if others see Him as the greatest God alive! So when believers go out and proclaim to be Christians but act like the carnal world it defames His Holy name.
Our motivation for following His rules, keeping His ways and obeying Him is so that others may come to know Him as the Greatest God EVER!
My challenge to you if for you to sing your songs of His greatness and spend time worshipping Him, but then to also go out and live a life that brings attention AND glory to Him. Look – God is going to fill you with His Spirit so that you can accomplish this monumental task – you just have to go and do it!
