Send Me: Prayer & Fasting – Day 8 – 1-16-2017
Day 8 – Monday 1/16 – Be Determined – listen only for His voice
23 Give ear and hear my voice, Listen and hear my speech. 24 Does the plowman keep plowing all day to sow? Does he keep turning his soil and breaking the clods? 25 When he has leveled its surface, Does he not sow the black cumin And scatter the cummin, Plant the wheat in rows, The barley in the appointed place, And the spelt in its place? 26 For He instructs him in right judgment, His God teaches him. 27 For the black cummin is not threshed with a threshing sledge, Nor is a cartwheel rolled over the cummin; But the black cummin is beaten out with a stick, And the cummin with a rod. 28 Bread flour must be ground; Therefore he does not thresh it forever, Break it with his cartwheel, Or crush it with his horsemen. 29 This also comes from the Lord of hosts, Who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in guidance.
That seems like a lot of farming advice. The point for today is not to teach nor instruct you on the gentle variations of different types of cumin and flour. The lesson for today is found in between the various plant types. The teaching is all about hearing and being determined to hear.
When this was being written there were many flashbacks to when, as a child, instructions were given to me to “listen” and were often followed by the question, “Did you hear what I said?” As a matter of fact my children have had to endure similar treatment when they did not seem to be paying attention. Their little faces would squeeze out between my fingers as their loving father would grab them and orient their face directly at mine. That would almost always be followed by the directive, “Listen to me!” Well, if you have raised children you have probably walked down a similar path.
When reading through this passage there is a feeling of God trying to get the attention of the people through the prophet by using this farming example. Why is it so important to listen? Verse 26 explains, “He instructs hi in right judgment, His God teaches him.” The reality is that each one of us can stand some more instruction in spiritual matters. To think otherwise is to allow the human ego to overwhelm reality which in turn leads to pride which leads to spiritual death.
Today the task is to be determined to listen for His voice and to His voice. There is wisdom and great instruction waiting for you as He speaks. You must filter out the other voices which all vie for your attention yet only serve to distract from the One who has all true wisdom and instruction for you. Take some time today and set your heart on hearing His voice, listen closely to Him and see what new things He has for you.
